The Clio Sport Tourer GT Line TomTom 1.6 VVT 111 Auto is quite expensive at £17,015 but it is still a very good little car, offering bags of practicality and a good driving experience. However, if you really need loads of space, the larger Megane Sport Tourer is available for this money, albeit in a more basic level of trim.

PROS:  The Clio Sport Tourer offers all the chic of the standard Clio hatchback but adds a healthy dose of practicality into the equation.

CONS:  Residual values will be weak and the Clio's overly assisted steering is a little vague.

Behind the Wheel

The Clio Sport Tourer is fitted with a 1.6-litre petrol engine which produces 111bhp and 112lb-ft of torque. It's a good engine but the automatic gearbox harms the 0-62mph and this model only manages it in a fairly mediocre 12.4 seconds. Flat out you'll be doing 116mph.

However, the Clio Sport Tourer handles very well indeed; it's just as good to drive as the hatchback. There is plenty of grip through the bends and the body control is excellent. The steering is a little vague and lifeless but the car is very well refined with very little wind, engine or road noise, even at speed.

Looks & Equipment

The Clio Sport Tourer is a cracking little car and manages to look just as good as an estate car as it does as a hatchback - a rare feat in automotive design. The interior is also very stylish and tastefully finished and the quality of the interior plastics is exemplary.

Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows, cruise control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, a CD player with MP3 connectivity and a Sat-Nav.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Renault don't have the best reputation for reliability and the Clio only rated averagely in the 2011 J D Power Survey but it feels well made and is supplied with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty.

The standard Clio scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests and the Clio Sport Tourer should also be a very safe car thanks to a good range of airbags. Stability control is an optional extra, however, at £315.

The Clio isn't massive but it does offer a good amount of boot space with 439-litres on offer with the rear seats up and 1277-litres available with the seats folded flat.

Value for Money

The Clio Sport Tourer GT Line TomTom 1.6 VVT 111 Auto is the most expensive model in the range at £17,015 and it could be argued that the cheaper models offer better value for money.

The running costs will also be relatively high for a car of this type and the Clio manages just 36.2mpg (combined). CO2 emissions of 179g/km also mean that the Renault falls under a relatively high road tax band (I) but group 13 insurance should be relatively cheap.
