PROS: The Clio ECO is very cheap to run thanks to extremely good fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. It's also good looking and great fun to drive.
CONS: You don't get much equipment included as standard and the steering is a little vague.
The Clio's 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 88bhp and 148lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0-62mph time of 11.0 seconds and a top speed of 113mph. It's a good engine and is well suited to the Clio, delivering good performance as well as impressive eco-credentials.
The Clio is a great car to drive thanks to a stiff chassis and suspension that manages to be firm without being uncomfortable. The steering is a little over-assisted but it isn't bad enough to spoil the rest of the car.
The Clio is also a capable long distance cruiser and is very well refined with road, engine and wind noise all well insulated against.
The Clio looks great and it is easily the most stylish car in its class. The interior is also very nice, if a bit spartan.
The Expression trim doesn't come with much standard equipment with electric mirrors, electric windows, power steering and a CD player with MP3 connectivity the only luxuries on offer. Optional extras include alloy wheels (£315), air-con (£575), an electric sunroof (£630), metallic paint (£455) and sat-nav (£470).
The Clio should be very safe and scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP tests. It comes as standard with six airbags but stability control is a £315 optional extra.
It is also a practical car with enough interior space for four adults to be seated comfortably. The boot is also a good size with 288-litres on offer with the rear seats up and 1038-litres available with the rear seats folded down.
Renaults aren't the most reliable cars in the world and Clio owners have pointed out flaws with the interior. It comes as standard with a 3 year/100,000 mile waranty.
The Renault Clio Expression dCi 88 ECO is relatively reasonably priced at £12,450 - despite its lack of standard kit - but it's the Clio's running costs that are the real headline news.
The Clio manages an impressive combined 78.4mpg and emits just 94g/km of CO2. This means that both road tax and the congestion charge will be free which is a big bonus, especially if you live in London. Group 13 insurance should also be very reasonable but resale values aren't brilliant.
