The Clio GT Line TomTom dCi 88 is an excellent car, offering plenty of standard equipment and good fuel economy. However, it's pricey for a Clio and you may decide that the cheaper models offer better value.

PROS:  This Clio is well equipped, good to drive and very economical.

CONS:  It's a bit pricey for a supermini and reliability isn't the best.

Behind the Wheel

The Clio's 1.5-litre diesel engine is a very good unit, producing 88bhp and 148lb-ft of torque. Small diesel-engined cars can sometimes be a bit clattery and unrefined but the Clio has none of these problems, remaining smooth even at higher revs. 0-62mph takes a perfectly adequate 12.7 seconds and a top speed of 108mph.

The Clio handles very well indeed thanks to a firm chassis and suspension which limits body roll through the bends. There's plenty of grip on offer and the ride is surprisingly composed for such a sharp handling small car. At high speeds the Clio is also very refined and there is very little engine, wind and road noise.

Looks & Equipment

The Clio looks superb and has a chic appeal that you just don't get from other cars. The current model has been with us since 2006 and must be due for replacement soon but it still looks as fresh today as it did when it was launched. The interior is very luxurious for such a small car with high quality plastics having been used throughout.

The Clio comes with a good level of standard kit including alloy wheels, climate control, electric mirrors, electric windows, cruise control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, Sat-Nav and a CD player with MP3 connectivity.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Renaults are not the most reliable cars in the world and the 2011 J D Power survey did highlight some problems with some of the interior fittings. However, the Clio should be reliable mechanically and comes with a good 3 year/100,000 mile warranty.

Four people will fit comfortably in the Clio thanks to a good amount of cabin space. The boot is also a good size, offering 288-litres with the rear seats up and 1038-litres with the seats folded flat.

The Clio should be very safe and is fitted with ABS and plenty of airbags. It scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

Value for Money

The Clio GT Line TomTom dCi 88 3dr is priced at £15,100, making it one of the more expensive models in the Clio lineup. However, you could argue that it offers good value for money considering the amount of equipment included as standard.

The running costs will be very low indeed and the Clio manages a combined 70.6mpg thanks to its superb diesel engine. Road tax will also be cheap unde VED band B thanks to CO2 emissions of 106g/km. Group 13 insurance is fairly average for a car of this type.
