The Clio is a fantastic little car - one of the best cars in its class - but this model is a little basic. On the plus side, it's cheap and economical but there are better cars available in the range if you can stretch your budget just a little further.

PROS:  The Clio is cheap, good looking, nice to drive and surprisingly refined for such a small car.

CONS:  This is the cheapest model in the range and, as such, there isn't much equipment offered as standard.

Behind the Wheel

The Clio Expression 1.2 16v comes with Renault's 1.2-litre petrol engine which delivers 75bhp and 79lb-ft of torque. This translates in to a 0-62mph time of 13.4 seconds and a top speed of just 104mph. This model is fine for urban driving but get it on to the open road and it feels a little asthamtic. The engine also gets a bit noisy at higher speeds.

The Clio handles beautifully and feels light and agile thanks to its well sorted chassis. The steering is a little vague which can get annoying but the ride is superb and the Clio feels like a much bigger car to drive.

Looks & Equipment

It's getting on a bit now but the Clio is still the best looking car in its class. The interior is similarly stylish, if a little bit basic.

There is a very limited amount of standard equipment on this model with electric windows and a CD player with MP3 connectivity the only features fitted.

Optional extras include alloy wheels (£520), air-con (£575), electric sunroof (£630), metallic paint (£455) and sat-nav (£470).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

There's plenty of space inside for four adults and the boot is a decent size too with 288-litres on offer with the rear seats up and 2038-litres available with the rear seats down.

Renault don't have a good reputation for reliability but the Clio should be mechanically sound. The 2011 J D Power survey highlighted a number of small issues with the interior but the Clio is supplied as standard with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty.

The Clio scored the maximum of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and is fitted as standard with six airbags. Stability control, however, is an optional extra.

Value for Money

The Renault Clio Expression 1.2 16v is the cheapest five-door Clio currently on offer and is relatively reasonably priced despite its lack of standard equipment.

It should be relatively cheap to run, returning 48.7mpg on the combined cycle and emitting 135g/km of CO2. This means it falls under VED band E and insurance should be pretty cheap, falling under group 8.
