PROS: The Clio is good to drive, superbly refined and looks great.
CONS: The automatic gearbox harms the fuel economy and the Expression trim is a bit basic.
The Clio Expression 1.6 VVT 111 Auto comes with Renault's 1.6-litre petrol engine which develops 111bhp and 112lb-ft of torque. It's not the best engine on offer and the automatic gearbox harms both the performance and the fuel consumption. 0-62mph takes 12.2 seconds and flat out you'll be going 116mph.
The overly light steering is a bit of a disappointment but apart from this the Clio is great fun to drive with loads of grip. It's also very comfortable and wind, road and engine noise are all well hushed.
The Clio looks great and offers charm and chic that the likes of the VW Polo and Ford Fiesta can only dream about matching. The interior feels well screwed together but it's a little bit basic on this model. You don't get a lot of standard kit either with air-con, electric windows, cruise control and a CD player with MP3 connectivity all that's on offer.
Optional extras include sat-nav (£470), metallic paint (£455), electric sunroof (£630) and alloy wheels (£520).
The Clio scored the maximum of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and is fitted as standard with six airbags. Stability control, however, is an optional extra.
There's plenty of space inside for four adults and the boot is a decent size too with 288-litres on offer with the rear seats up and 2038-litres available with the rear seats down.
Renault don't have a good reputation for reliability but the Clio should be mechanically sound. Owners have reported a number of interior niggles, however.
The Clio Expression 1.6 VVT 111 Auto is priced at £13,090 which is pretty reasonable for a car of this type.
The running costs are quite high for a supermini and the Clio manages just 36.3mpg (combined) which is pretty poor. It also emits 179g/km of CO2 which pushes it up into a relatively high tax bracket: I. However, it should be cheap to insure, falling under insurance group 12.
