The iconic Caterham badge could be found on city cars and crossovers as well as a new range of sports cars within the next few years, according to company chairman Tony Fernandes.
Speaking at the launch of thew new Caterham AeroSeven concept (pictured above), Fernandes said that "Caterham will show itself to be a progressive, open and entrepreneurially powered car brand that will deliver and surprise in equal measure.
"It has been a British institution for the last 40 years, and automotive secret in many ways, but in the very near future, the Caterham name will sit proudly on crossovers, city cars as well as a range of sportscars for everyone."
Fernandes claims that the company's intention is to expand its 'sporting heartbeat' with a range of new sports cars to suit both thrill-seekers and lifestyle buyers.
In the two years since Fernandes bought Caterham, the company has expanded to include an engineering arm in Caterham Technology and Innovation, a specialist composites material consultancy in Caterham Composites and, of course, the Caterham F1 Team and Racing GP2 team.
And while there's still a bit of a wait until we see the new Alpine-Caterham sports car on the road, Fernandes claims that Caterham's product expansion is not as far off as it seems.
"Because we're a flat company, we're a quicker company. When we say we're going to do things internally, we do them. We don't procrastinate and lose momentum through legions of middle-management decision makers, we just do it."
The new Caterham AeroSeven is expected to be launched next year, with the Caterham-Alpine sports car following in 2016.
