Hyundai has announced it will launch a series of high-performance road cars under a new 'N' sub-brand.

Although taking its name from Hyundai's R&D centre in Namyang, South Korea, the new N brand will be based at the current home of Hyundai's Motorsport division in Alzenau, near Frankfurt.

Unfortunately, Hyundai has not yet confirmed which models will be given the N treatment; however, it's likely that the first model to wear the badge will be the i20, forging a link between the company's road cars and Hyundai Motorsport's 2014 World Rally Championship car (pictured above), which is also based on the i20.

If, indeed, the i20 N (or whatever it will be called) does go ahead, it would compete against the likes of the Peugeot 208 GTI, Renaultsport Clio Turbo and Fiesta ST in the supermini-based hot hatch segment.

Given that Hyundai has enjoyed a meteoric rise from bumbling mediocrity to Euro-rivalling quality in less than a decade, gaining some genuine kudos with a line-up of performance models is the next logical move. We await Hyundai's new N cars with anticipation.
