Honda is planning to cut production at its Swindon factory from three shifts to two, resulting in the potential loss of 340 jobs.
The company is blaming shrinking sales in Europe for the move. The planned cuts will also see production of the Civic, Civic Tourer, CR-V, Jazz, and -- from next year -- the Civic Type-R consolidated from two production lines into one.
The planned cuts also include 160 temporary positions and will put a significant dent in the factory's 3000-strong workforce.
"Over the last 12 months, we haven't seen the growth we'd anticipated. With no increase forecast for the next couple of years, we must scale our manufacturing activity accordingly," said Ian Howells, senior vice president of Honda Motor Europe.
"However, with the restructuring we're taking today, and our new model plans, we remain confident in the long-term future of our Swindon plant. Our Swindon operation continues to be the hub for our European car manufacturing activity," he said.
This isn't the first time Honda has axed jobs at its Swindon facility. The company announced plans to cut 800 jobs last year, with around 600 redundancies actually taking place, only 38 of which were compulsory.
