Caterham Cars has unveiled pictures of its new AeroSeven Concept ahead of the car's official debut at this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix.
The car, which is described by the manufacturer as a "performance concept road car", was first shown a couple of weeks ago in a rather ambiguous teaser image; however, this is the first time that we've seen the car in full.
As you can see, the AeroSeven Concept remains faithful to Caterham's tried-and-tested philosophy of ruthless minimalism. The carbon-fibre body has been specially designed to increase downforce while improving the car's drag coefficient. And while there's a new rollover structure, both the driver and passenger are completely exposed to the elements. Like most of Caterham's cars, this is not a vehicle in which you want to take on a rainy December commute to work.
Underneath, the AeroSeven is fitted with a front-mounted 237bhp 2.0-litre Ford Duratec engine which sends its power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Peak power comes at 8,500rpm and Caterham claims that the engine is one of the highest-revving EU6-compliant engines on the market. Unsurprisingly, performance is brisk; 0-62mph arrives in less than 4.0 seconds.
Based on the Caterham Seven CSR chassis, the AeroSeven gets F1-style pushrod front suspension, new dampers, springs and anti-roll bars. There's also a new variable traction control system and launch control and Caterham is also evaluating the feasibility of using Bosch's new race-derived ABS system.
The AeroSeven comes with a number of exclusive technologies which have never before been seen on a Caterham, including a new graphical display unit (GDU) which brings together the gauges and instruments on a high-resolution, centrally-mounted unit.
In addition to this, drivers can choose between four modes via the 'race-inspired' steering wheel: Race, Road, Flash-to-Pass and -- get this -- Pit Lane Speed Limiter. Very cool.
Although still in the concept stage at the moment, Caterham claims that a production version of the AeroSeven concept will go on sale in the autumn of 2014.
