If you are looking for a high performance petrol car with a small engine the Renault Megane GT Line TomTom 1.4 tcE 130 could be a wise choice. The good range of standard equipment and plush interior levels may offset the higher retail price but diesel variants offer better value and may be a wiser investment.

PROS:  Hot Hatch-style sports handling, impressive performance from a 1397cc engine and fantastic list of equipment are the standout features in Renault Megane GT Line TomTom 1.4 CE 130. As the name suggests it offers a TomTom satellite navigation system as standard but also comes with parking sensors and climate control.

CONS:  Despite the Megane GT Line TomTom 1.4TCe 130’s impressive performance figures and trim levels £19,225 is still a little pricey. Diesel models offer better value for money.

Behind the Wheel

The 1397cc engine delivers an impressive 130bhp at 5,500 revs and 140 lb of torque at 2,500 revs. More impressive is the quoted fuel consumption figure of 44.8 mpg which will appeal to younger drivers who want to own a hot hatch but are concerned about running costs. A top speed of 124 mph is impressive given the size of the engine.

Standard climate control allows for a pleasant driving experience no matter what the weather. Refinement is fairly good and the overall ride is smooth with sharp and responsive steering.

Looks & Equipment

There is no doubt that the Renault Megane Line TomTom 1.4TCe is a pretty looking machine and will turn heads wherever it roams. The standard alloy wheels, which cost £310 if offered as options on other models in the range, add to the mean looking appearance.

Cruise control and rear parking sensors are just two items on lengthy list of equipment that is offered as standard.

Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity as well as satellite navigation add to the car’s appeal and will help attract a younger gadget savvy buyer.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Safety features include driver, passenger and side impact airbags as standard. Stability control is also standard.

While listed to seat five adults, a long journey may not be so enticing to some given the poor rear head room.

The ample 372-litre boot will swallow most family holiday requirements and those looking for extra load space will be impressed that this figure is nearly trebled when the rear seats are lowered and will find favour with younger buyers who will have need to transport weekend sporting equipment.

The car benefits from Renault’s standard three-year or 100,000-mile warranty and the back-up of its 260 strong dealer network.

Value for Money

Despite its racy good looks and impressive equipment list the Renault Megane Line TomTom TCe 130 is the most expensive 1397cc model in the entire Megane range.

However that price compares well with rivals from other manufacturers in the same class and the impressive fuel efficiency will help to counter the initial outlay. But for a few grand more a diesel engine version with the same equipment list may hold better resale values and appeal more to a family buyer.

A good fun car though and not to overlooked if you are looking for a hot hatch.
