If you are considering your first convertible the Renault Megane Coupe Dynamique TomTom 1.6 110 would make an ideal starting point. This class looking machine, especially when the roof is down, will turn heads wherever it roams.

A relatively low insurance group rating of 16 and a retail price of £20,340 will make the car an attractive option for younger drivers.

All Megane coupes come with a TomTom satellite navigation system, Bluetooth and MP3 player connectivity and alloy wheels so the deciding point will be on performance figures and budgets. Buyers with a little more budget would be best advised to look further up the range.

PROS:  Striking good looks and an impressive equipment list are the standout features on the Renault Megane Coupe Cabriolet Dynamique TomTom 1.6 110.

CONS:  Poor fuel consumption and a sluggish 0-62 mph time compared to its two sister cars will send buyers further up the range. The 1400cc variant offers better performance figures than this 1600cc car. Overall all Megane Coupe Cabriolets have good but not brilliant handling attributes.

Behind the Wheel

The 1598cc engine produces 110 bhp at 6,000 rpm and delivers 112 lb ft of torque at 4250 rpm. It is capable of a top seep of 118 mph but it takes 12.2 seconds to reach 62mph from standstill making it the second slowest Megane across the entire range. Only the automatic version of the cabriolet is slower but that is fitted with an eight-valve diesel engine.

Fuel consumption figures of 37.2 mpg make it the thirstiest Megane in the entire range and another reason to look elsewhere.

There have been reports of restrictive viewing through the two front windscreen pillars which will not add to the driving experience.

Overall a good choice to start your cabriolet owning experience but there are better cars out there although you will need an extra three grand in your pocket to make the step.
The ride quality is best described as solid but not overwhelming, with fairly good refinement.

Looks & Equipment

All of the open top Meganes in the range are head turners , especially when the roof is down. One nice feature is the solid glass roof so even in cold or damp weather you can still get the feeling of open-top driving despite the roof being in place. Standard alloy wheels add to the good looks.

The entire range is well appointed and the Megane Coupe Cabriolet Dynamique TomTom 1.6 110 is no exception. As the name suggests TomTom satellite navigation is standard along with Bluetooth and MP3 player connectivity. Power steering, central locking and stability control are also fitted.

An air conditioning unit is as standard with climate control available for £410.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

All three variants in the range offer 211 litres of boot space which is not all that great if four adults are on board and you need space for all their luggage. However if you are using this car primarily as a two-seater the boot space will be more than sufficient for weekend baggage.

All three models come with driver, passenger and side impact airbags, stability control is fitted as standard. Security features include an alarm and an immobiliser.

The car comes with Renault’s standard three-year or 100,000-mile warranty and the back-up of its 260-strong dealer network.

Value for Money

As entry level cabriolets go this is good value for money but if your budget can stretch an extra three grand or so you will be better off looking at the other two cars in the range as they offer better performance and fuel consumption ratings and will be an all round better investment.

Overall you won’t be disappointed with this car and its relatively cheap asking price and high equipment levels make it a worthwhile purchase, especially for first time buyers.
