The Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic’s 4-cylinder, 24-valve, turbocharged diesel engine has an impressive sounding maximum power output of 197bhp. This propels the car from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds, almost a full second quicker than a BMW 318d M Sport Auto. The torque figure for the Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic sounds equally impressive at 309 lb-ft of torque, however it must be said the car does struggle somewhat to transfer that to the road. The general consensus is that the manual version can be hard work as a result, so the capable 6-speed automatic in this model is a welcome inclusion.
Where the Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport does genuinely impress is in its handling. The ride can be unforgiving on less even surfaces, but for long-distance cruising is up there with the best in its class. It copes equally well in the turns, where its excellent levels of grip, body control, and sharp and responsive steering make it a very involving drive.
On the flagship Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic, the smart, business-like styling of the everyday Mondeo is spiced up with larger alloys, black honeycomb grille, and a rear boot spoiler. Inside the spacious cabin the quality is reassuringly high, with both the standard of the materials and of the finish much better than in previous Mondeos, and fares well against other cars in its price range. The driving position is very good, with plenty of adjustment options, and the seats are very supportive. The dash and control are ergonomically pleasing, easy to both read and operate.
The level of standard equipment in the Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic is very good, with power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric windows, cruise control, rear parking sensors, combination leather and alcantara seats, driver airbags, passenger airbags, front side airbags, alarm & immobiliser, CD player, MP3 connectivity, and bluetooth. You do, however, get the same level of standard equipment in the 2.0-litre powershift model, which is over £1,000 cheaper to buy.
Euro NCAP safety testing resulted in a 5-star rating for the Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic in terms of occupant protection. The child protection rating came out slightly lower, with a score of 4. The Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic does include as standard front, passenger, and front side airbags.
The Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic does provide an exceptional level of space for both driver and passengers, consuming five occupants with ease. The boot space is also excellent, with a seats up boot capacity of 528 litres. The Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic’s price tag puts it in the same bracket as a BMW 3-Series, but in terms of practicality the Ford has the added advantage of being a 5-door hatchback as opposed to a 4-door saloon.
The Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic feels a quality product, and comes with a 60,000 mile, 3-year warranty. The service interval is a reasonable 12,500 miles, and Ford benefits from an extensive dealership network.
At £29,445 the Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic comes close to the purchase price of a BMW 318d M Sport Auto, and although the BMW is considerably less powerful it has significantly lower running costs. The Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic has combined returns of 43.5mpg compared to the BMW’s 53.3mpg, and with 173g/km of C02 emissions the Ford falls into Road Tax Band H, three tax bands higher than its German rival. The Ford Mondeo TDCi 2.2 Titanium X Sport Automatic’s insurance group of 26 is higher too.
In comparison the 2.0-litre version of the Ford Mondeo TDCi Titanium X Sport Automatic is over £1,000 less expensive than its bigger brother, with the same equipment level, and despite generating less power at 161bhp, has the same rewarding drive. Crucially, it is more frugal at a combined 50.4mpg, falls into Road Tax Band E, and insurance group 22, factors which won’t be lost on high mileage business and fleet buyers.
The lofty price tag could also hit residual values, although these will be bolstered by the high level of standard equipment on the car.
