The Ford Mondeo 1.6T Eco Boost Titanium is one of the higher levels of trim in the Mondeo range. It is one of the best large family cars to drive, and provides all the desired essentials: comfort, performance, security and space.

More refined than its predecessor, the new Mondeo retains the former’s record handling and grip, while adding a bit of style. The BMWs and Audis of its class remain favourites in styling and finish, however, the Mondeo manages to attain a high level of quality. Combining excellent performance with a high quality finish, the Mondeo makes the perfect family vehicle.

PROS:  Good looks. Powerful, economic engine. Comfortable and fun to drive. Spacious. Plenty of equipment. Good pricing.

CONS:  Central console clumsy. Resale values not so good.

Behind the Wheel

The car has a 4-cylinder, 16-valve, 1.6-litre 1596cc petrol engine, which is refined and powerful yet economical. It produces 158 bhp and has torque figures of 177 lb-ft. The car handles extremely well and responds well over all road terrains – city, motorway, hilly and rutted open roads. Firm grip and high levels of body control keep it stable.

Steering is precise, sharp and responsive. Suspension is good and the Mondeo absorbs most bumps and road imperfections with ease. It remains crisp in corners and does not have even the slightest body roll. At low speeds, the ride is characteristically firm but becomes smooth when you increase speed. The car has a top speed of 134mph and a 0-62 time of 9.3 seconds.

The diving position is excellent, and so is forward visibility. A-pillars are small and swept back, giving a clear front view. Rear pillars are shallow as well, and together with a sizeable rear view mirror, give good rear visibility.

High levels of refinement ensure that you can enjoy a quiet ride, completely insulated from wind and road noise. The engine revs quietly so it won’t be a distraction either.

Looks & Equipment

The Ford Mondeo looks somewhat like the Volkswagen Passat. It is an attractive car, with plenty of detailing that will definitely turn heads wherever you drive. A five-door, five-seat large family hatchback, the Ford Mondeo is slightly bigger than the average car in its class. At 4784mm x 1886mm, it is taller and wider than the BMW 5-series.

Ford’s offering of equipment is generous in the Titanium trim. It is fitted with climate control, cruise control, stability control, power steering, central locking, immobilizer, alarm, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, driver airbag, passenger airbags, front side airbags, CD player, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth.

A little more luxury will cost you several thousand pounds extra, depending on what you choose. Leather seats go for £1,550, metallic paint £545, rear parking sensors £450 and Sat Nav £1,000.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Ford Mondeo is larger than its predecessor and consequently there is plenty of room inside the cabin for five adults to sit in relative comfort.

Boot space is a good size too at 528 litres, and can accommodate five large bags. Rear seats fold completely to increase the space to 1448 litres.

There are a range of steering wheel and driver’s seat adjustments, so you will be able set the driving position to a comfortable level. The pedals are positioned for precision in control.

The dashboard has an interesting and stylish layout, with the instruments neatly arranged. There is a wide screen with easy-to-control steering wheel-mounted buttons.

The central console is not as neat as you would expect though and makes for a clumsy storage area.

The car has plenty of safety features and scored a five-star rating at the Euro NCAP test for occupant safety. Ford is a reliable brand, and you should enjoy trouble-free service from your Mondeo.

Value for Money

The Ford Mondeo is competitively priced, given that rivals such as the BMW 5-Series and Renault Laguna cost more. A lot of dealers will be willing to give you a discount too. The residual value of the Ford Mondeo Titanium is, however, low.

The car is cheap to run, and barring any mechanical problems, should serve you for many years. There is a 3-year warranty or 60,000 miles warranty option, and a 12,500 mile service interval to keep you covered.

The start/stop mechanism used on the engine helps keep fuel consumption low. The car manages a return of 44.1mpg on average, which is good for its class. Top rivals Renault and BMW 5-series return much less.

The Mondeo is a large car, so do not expect very low carbon emissions. It gives an average of 149g/km, which is decent for a car this size. It falls under Road Tax band F, meaning it will cost you £130 in VED annually. Insurance should be affordable, going by its group 19 classification.
