The Ford Mondeo has been the car of choice for many company cars for years, but it is also a very spacious and practical family car that delivers a good ride for passengers. The driver also gets plenty of feedback from the drive itself, and the engine is powerful enough to deal with almost every situation that it is likely to encounter.

PROS:  The engine is powerful and responsive and delivers a smooth ride that is ideal for those travelling long distances, and the range of features with this model is particularly impressive.

CONS:  When being driven hard the 2.0 litre engine can get a little bit noisy, and the savings in terms of fuel performance will only be worthwhile for those covering many miles.

Behind the Wheel

Drivers who are looking for a responsive car will find that the Mondeo will tick an awful lot of boxes, with sharp handling and plenty of grip around the corners. The ride is immaculate whether there is one person or five in the car, with the suspension adapting to the number of passengers well. The driving seat is easily adjustable and almost everyone will be able to adjust the position to find a comfortable driving stance for them.

The 2.0 litre TDCi engine delivers some impressive performance figures for a big car, being able to get from 0-62mph in 10.2 seconds. This Mondeo also has a top speed of 127mph, which will be more than enough for the vast majority of drivers. The one quibble with driving the Mondeo is that it is a big car, and those who are used to driving smaller cars may find it difficult to judge the dimensions of the vehicle from the driving seat.

Looks & Equipment

Although the original Mondeo was a hugely popular car, the style and design has changed quite significantly over the years, with the oval headlights being swapped for sleeker eye-shaped lights. The grille and the air intake combine to make a nice front end, and the lines running the whole of the car make for a sleek and attractive body on what is a large car. Having the alloy wheels as standard is also a nice bonus that complements the style of the Mondeo well.

The Titanium X is generally considered one of the best levels of equipment available in a Ford, and the heated leather seats certainly do demonstrate that level of luxury. Front and rear parking sensors also means that those who are nervous about parking a large car will have all the assistance they need.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

When it comes to the practicality of the Mondeo, the size of the boot is one of the most impressive aspects, with room for plenty of luggage or shopping there. Legroom in the back seats also means that carrying passengers will not see them feeling cramped or squeezed. The balanced engine delivers good performance on the motorway and on suburban and urban streets, so the Mondeo certainly is a very practical car.

The usual raft of driving aids help to make it very safe to drive, and the five stars awarded in the Euro NCAP safety tests confirm that the full range of airbags will all do their job in an accident. The alarm and immobiliser are complemented by a good range of security features which will help to deter thieves and ensure the Mondeo stays right where it should be.

Value for Money

As with many other Ford vehicles that are fitted with the Titanium X level of trim, it is often at a hefty price, and this version of the Mondeo comes in at £25,995. For those looking for cheaper cars, there are certainly Mondeos that come at a lower price range, and those with petrol engines do also tend to be cheaper to buy.

The performance of the diesel engine gives and average fuel efficiency of 50.4mpg, which is not bad at all compared to some similar rivals. The fact that there are so many second hand Mondeos on the market does affect resale value, but those with the Titanium X level of trim are more desirable. Insuring the car is quite reasonable, and the usual combination of a three year warranty and one year’s roadside breakdown assistance is really the minimum of what would be expected.
