Many people will look at the TT Roadster as the bargain open top sports car, but with a fun driving experience and good performance to accompany this, it really does deliver and tick a lot of boxes. Although this is the entry level model, it is powerful and quick enough to be fun, and is surprisingly economical for those who have to budget for their driving fun.

PROS:  A modern-classic compact sports car that isn't too hard on the wallet while still delivering a fun and exciting driving experience and plenty of speed.

CONS:  Rear view can be compromised when the roof is raised, and the folding roof significantly reduces the space available in the boot.

Behind the Wheel

For people who are looking for a sporty driving experience then there is no doubt that the TT Roadster delivers fun in buckets, and with a 0-60mph of just 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 139mph, this does not feel like a sports car on a budget. The grip is plentiful and the handling keeps the driver firmly in touch with the road and what is happening beneath the wheels. The front wheel drive is frisky and exciting and is certainly worth taking to the open road for a bit of fun from time to time.

The driving position is very good and the fittings are comfortable, and although leather seats, satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity are all additional extras they aren't necessary to enjoying the experience. There are plenty of more powerful cars that struggle to deliver the kind of excitement and driving experience that is delivered by the TT roadster.

Looks & Equipment

The TT Roadster has been on the market for a number of years, and the facelift has given the car a low and sleek image with the vents along the front of the car that have inspired so many other cars. Having alloy wheels as standard even on the most basic model is a pleasant luxury, and gives a quality look to the vehicle.

There is a long list of optional extras available for people to choose from, and there are also models higher up the range featuring some of these extras, but those who are buying in to the basic end of the TT roadster range will be happy with the options given as standard. Climate control and adjustable steering rake and reach are welcome, and the driving aids such as traction control and ESP both add to the quality of the driving experience.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Those looking for practical cars will have to look elsewhere, and the luggage space of the Roadster is less than the standard TT because of the space taken by the folding fabric roof. As with all of the cars in the Audi range, the TT Roadster comes with a three year or sixty thousand mile warranty and three years roadside breakdown assistance provided by the RAC.

The original Audi TT suffered from a number of controversial safety issues, but these have been ironed out for the second generation of the vehicle. ABS, traction control and ESP all help to make driving safe, and there are also airbags at the front and side for both passenger and driver. Although the fabric roof will reduce the security of the car when it has been parked, the standard security features such as the alarm and unique parts help to ensure that the car is as secure as possible.

Value for Money

For many people who are looking at the TT Roadster as their first small sports car, there is no doubt that it is an attractive and affordable option. The main competition for any car trying to get into the small roadster market is the Mazda MX-5, but the TT is significantly more expensive with a price tag of £25,320. However, both offer a different driving experience.

Although the insurance group for a TT Roadster isn't cheap, it is certainly competitive when compared with other cars in the class, and the average mpg of 43.5 means that it is not too bad in terms of fuel performance either. Overall, the entry level TT Roadster is one of the most fun driving experiences for those who are on a budget.
