Volvo has announced it will unleash 100 self-driving cars to the streets of Gothenburg in 2017 as part of the world's first large-scale autonomous driving pilot project.
The project, entitled 'Drive Me -- Self-driving cars for sustainable mobility', is a joint initiative between Volvo, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, Lindholmen Science Park and the City of Gothenburg.
The aim of the project is to "pinpoint the societal benefits of autonomous driving" and will involve self-driving cars using around 50km of selected roads around Gothenburg, including typical commuter routes.
"Our aim is for the car to be able to handle all possible traffic scenarios by itself, including leaving the traffic flow and finding a safe 'harbour' if the driver for any reason is unable to regain control," said Erik Coelingh, Technical Specialist at Volvo Car Group.
The project begins next year, with the first cars expected to be on the roads by 2017. Much of the early research and development will be given over to assessing the societal and economic benefits brought about by improving traffic efficiency, the infrastructure needed for autonomous driving, how other motorists interact with driverless cars and customers' confidence in autonomous vehicles.
