The new Fiat 500X SUV will be built alongside a new small Jeep at Fiat's Melfi factory from early 2014.

The move follows an investment of more than €1billion in the firm's Melfi manufacturing facility in Italy, which Fiat claims will become "one of the most advanced car assembly plants in the world."

Both cars will be built on the new Fiat-Chrysler 'Small Wide' platform which, despite its name, can be modified to produce larger vehicles. In addition to this, the platform meets the strict US regulatory standards, allowing the new models to go on sale in America without further modification.

The 500X is the fourth model to be visually and technically based on the Fiat 500, continuing Fiat's plans to establish a 500 sub-marque in its model line-up. Very few details are known on the new car but it is expected to be heavily based on the current Punto.

Even less is known about the new Jeep, but given the car's size and probable market placement, it is likely that it will be a Nissan Juke-sized crossover vehicle.
