Peugeot is reportedly working on a new, even sportier version of the Peugeot 208 GTI, which would be called the 208 R.
In an interview with Automotive News Europe, Peugeot CEO Maxime Picat said: "Above the 208 GTI, we will soon have an even sportier 208 R."
Although no details on the 208 R have yet been released, we'd expect it to come with a tuned verison of the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine found in the GTI. The engine is already used in the 270bhp RCZ R and although we're not expecting that sort of power output from the 208 R, the unit's pedigree does hint that the R could be something very special indeed.
Talking of pedigree, the 208 has already accrued a surprising amount of it in its relatively short lifespan. Not only has the GTI been heralded as return to form for Peugeot, but it has also proved itself to be a worthy base onto which Peugeot's motorsport division can pile bucketloads of power -- the 208 T16 Pikes Peak racer being a prime example of this.
It's unclear when -- or, indeed, if -- the 208 R will actually make it into production; however, if it does we'd expect to see it gracing Peugeot forecourts sometime next year.
