BMW has revealed its new 2 Series ahead of the car's debut at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show in January.
The 2 Series, which was leaked in a series of online images yesterday, is the replacement for the existing 1 Series Coupe. The change is part of BMW's new naming strategy in which coupe versions of existing models are given an even number designation one higher than their counterpart. BMW has already employed this strategy on the 4 Series and 6 Series models.
As you can see, the 2 Series looks entirely different to the 1 Series hatchback thanks to an in-house restyle which includes all-new bumpers, new headlights and larger front air intakes.
There will be three 2 Series models available from launch. The entry-level model, the 220i, which gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with 181bhp; the 220d, which gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine, again with 181bhp; and the range-topper, the M235i, which gets a 321bhp twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six, propelling it from 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds and on to a limited 155mph.
Two further 2.0-litre diesel engines -- the 218d and 225d -- will join the line-up next year. Fuel economy across the diesel line-up ranges from 67.3mpg and 111g/km of CO2 in the 218d to 60.1mpg and 124g/km in the 225d.
The wheelbase of the 2 Series is the same as the 1 Series but the new car is longer than its hatchback brother. This means there's an extra 30-litres of boot space over the hatchback, giving a total of 390-litres.
Buyers will be able to choose between Sport, Modern and M Sport specifications, the last of which comes as standard on the M235i and includes M-Sport brakes, variable-ratio steering, lowered suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels.
Prices for the new BMW 2 Series start from £25,040 for the 220i, rising to £25,865 for the 220d and £34,250 for the M235i. The 2 Series will go on sale in March.
