Volkswagen has released the first technical specs of its new Passat saloon and estate, ahead of the cars' July unveiling.
The new eight-generation Passat will include a range of new technology and, thanks to the use of high-strength steel and aluminium, will weigh in at 85kg less than its predecessor. Volkswagen claims that this could leave to efficiency improvements of up to 20 per cent.
The new Passat is marginally smaller than the outgoing model; however, interior space is improved, with more leg- and head-room, as well as increased luggage space.
Under the bonnet, the new Passat sees the introduction of a new high-performance four-cylinder bi-turbo diesel engine, which develops 237bhp and 369lb-ft of torque. The engine will be available with a new seven-speed DSG gearbox and all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid model will also be on offer, with an all-electric range of 31 miles and a total hybrid range of around 600 miles.
The Passat will also feature Volkswagen's new Active Info Display, which replaces the instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch TFT screen, along with a head-up display, the latest generation of Park Assist and a 360-degree area view function. The Passat also gets the world's first Trailer Assist system, which helps the driver to reverse with a trailer, without the need for modification or adaptation of the trailer.
All new Passats will come with LED tail lights, and either halogen or LED headlights.
The new Passat will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October.
