A new track-only version of the McLaren 650S coupe will be revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this weekend.
Called the 650S Spint, the new car fits into the McLaren range below the more hardcore 650S GT3 racer, adding more downforce and lightness to the coupe to make it faster and more useable on the track.
The engine in the 650S racer is no more powerful than that fitted to the standard 650S and is formed from the same MonoCell carbon tub, reinforced with a FIA-approved roll cage. The only concession to comfort which remains in the Sprint’s cabin is air-conditioning, while a fire extinguisher is now included as standard.
The 650S Sprint also gets a quick-fill fuel cell, improved aerodynamics and better cooling thanks to bigger intakes and radiators. Other tweaks include a revised Brake Steer system, which brakes the inside rear wheel for better cornering, and new settings for McLaren’s ProActive Chassis Control system.
Buyers will also be able to choose from a range of options, including a new ‘computational fluid dynamics’ package, which adds more aerodynamic bodywork, a lightweight polycarbonate windscreen and a passenger seat.
If you’re tempted by the new 650S Sprint, you’ll be unsurprised to hear it’s not cheap. Prices start from £198,000 -- £2,750 than its road-legal brother – which, for a non-road legal car with no passenger seat as standard, is not an inconsiderable sum.
