If you are looking for a stylish, high-performing, reliable car then the Volkswagen Scirocco R TSI is a tempting choice. The ‘R’ version is Volkswagen’s flagship Scirocco, with a good level of standard kit, including a 6-speed direct-shift gearbox, to go with its stylish exterior design.

PROS:  A very quick and understated, stylish sports coupe. The Scirocco ‘R’ boasts a powerful and reliable engine, as well as a very good safety record.

CONS:  It is an expensive car, with similarly high running costs. Getting into the back of the Scirocco requires some flexibility and don’t expect a great deal of headroom. The boot is on the small side. The standard Scirocco TSI is a cheaper alternative to the ‘R’ version.

Behind the Wheel

The Scirocco R has an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. When it comes to acceleration, however, the Scirocco R really comes into its own, with a 0-62 mph time of 5.8 seconds – over 2 seconds quicker than the next fastest Scirocco.

The Scirocco R gets its hugely impressive speed from its 261 bhp engine. The sports suspension makes sure that the Scirocco R's power is transferred to the road in a comfortable fashion and although the suspension is slightly firm, the car holds its own against the Ford Focus RS and Renault Megane RenaultSport in terms of comfort.

The DSG gearbox utilises the double-clutch system, commonly found in racing cars, and ensures smooth and effective gear changes, while the steering is reassuringly heavy, even if it could do with being a bit more responsive.

Looks & Equipment

The Scirocco R has a more aggressively styled front end than the standard 2.0 TSI, which was already a very good-looking car. It also comes with 18-inch alloys as standard, with the option of 19-inch for a more sporty look.

The cabin is well designed and easy to navigate, with the impressive bucket seats surprisingly comfortable over long distances as well as being fully-adjustable.

The Scirocco R comes fitted with various high-end extras including electric/heated mirrors, electric front windows, climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, alloy wheels, MP3 connectivity and heated seats. Optional extras include a panoramic electric sunroof, rear parking sensors, leather seats and a built-in sat nav.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The four-seater Scirocco R has ample room in the front for average-sized adults, and although the back of the car is smaller, and relatively difficult to enter/exit, there is still a fair amount of room considering this is a high-performance coupe car.

The car comes with a 3-year (or 60,000 mile) warranty as standard. VW also have an enviable reputation when it comes to reliability.

The 312-litre boot on the Scirocco R is not the biggest and definitely not the easiest to load, but the back seats do fold down to create considerably more room (1006 litres).

The Scirocco R’s safety and security ratings are very impressive. It scored five out of five stars for all the Euro NCAP tests, with notable praise for its build quality and brakes. It also comes with an alarm, immobiliser, deadlocks and remote locking as standard.

Value for Money

The Scirocco R is quite expensive at £31,045, with the standard Scirocco - a fine car in itself - a full £5,000 cheaper. It is also more expensive that the Ford Focus RS and the Renault Megane RenaultSport.

The expense will continue when buying insurance and road tax. The Scirocco R is in insurance group 34 and road tax band J. However, the fuel economy is quite good, for what is essentially a sports car, at 35.3 mpg. CO2 emissions are high at 187 g/km.

The maintenance costs are relatively low, with Volkswagen offering ‘routine maintenance’ for free. The reliability and build quality also mean faults are uncommon.

There are cheaper alternatives to this Scirocco, but this ‘R’ model is a very, very good car.
