The Volkswagen Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI is one of the sportiest and most striking diesel cars around. In today’s financial climate there will be many people trading in expensive to run cars for something more economical.

When you choose the Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI the step down in performance does not have to be a step down in style. Being such a attractive proposition the Scirocco’s main rival may end up being another Volkswagen offering, the Golf BlueMotion.

PROS:  The Volkswagen Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI provides an excellent balance between power, performance and fuel economy. The styling also manages to retain the recognisable Volkswagen looks whilst also looking sportier and sleeker than others in the VW range.

CONS:  The diesel engine just doesn’t deliver enough power to compete with other cars in its class. Fuel economy may not be the main selling point for those in the market for a sports coupe.

Behind the Wheel

Despite having some impressive performance figures the Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI offers excellent fuel economy at 51.4mpg. The acceleration and top speed are also impressive for an oil-burner, reaching 62mph in 8.1 seconds and hitting 136mph.

The new Scirocco’s handling has taken a leap forward with the fitting of the ACC (Adaptive Chassis Control). This means the handling can be changed to suit the needs of the driver - so if you are navigating through winding country roads you can set it to sport mode so that it is more responsive, and for a long motorway journey you can set it to comfort. The comfort setting makes the ride quality excellent even at high speed on uneven surfaces. The noise has been reduced to the bare minimum so the ride is quiet at high speed.

Looks & Equipment

The styling of the Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI is certainly attractive, whilst not being too outlandish and over the top. Volkswagen is not exactly renowned for producing the most eye catching cars but the Scirocco is probably the best looking car in its range. It is lower, longer and wider than the Golf, whereas the Golf has remained relatively unchanged for many years.

The Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI has an impressive selection of features as standard. Volkswagen has thrown in electric windows and mirrors, climate control, leather steering wheel, sports suspension, 18 inch alloy wheels and six airbags. Leather seats will set you back an extra £1740, cruise control is £235 and rear parking sensors will raise the price by £365.

The interior styling is stylish without being over the top. The sports seats look good and provide comfort whilst also being supportive. The dash is also well laid out and built well, and the touchscreen is a nice addition.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The three door Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI received the maximum five stars rating in the Euro NCAP safety tests. This is the norm with most modern cars however some sportier models do fail to achieve the maximum.

The Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI is surprisingly roomy for a three door coupe. The front passenger and driver have plenty of head and legroom; however rear passengers may find it to be a bit of a squeeze. There is definitely not enough space for three rear passengers. The boot is also adequate, but has an awkward boot lip, which might make it difficult to store or remove large items.

Volkswagen provides a decent warranty. The three year 60,000 mile warranty is especially good considering VW's legendary reputation for reliability and build quality.

Value for Money

At £25,835 the Volkswagen Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI is certainly not cheap, however compared to other cars in its class it is relatively competitive.

The running costs and low emissions also contribute to making the Scirocco affordable to run. The emissions of 144g/km put the Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI in road tax band F, which is about the best you can achieve from a car of this type. The Peugeout RCZ 2.0 litre GT does perform better though with figures of 139g/km, falling in Band E.
