This is an entry level Scirocco, so isn’t the quickest or most refined, but it’s engine is superb and the car is as fun as it is good-looking.

PROS:  A good value car. This Scirocco has both decent performance stats and good economy. It also has a brilliant petrol engine and comes with plenty of gadgets.

CONS:  Some buyers will want the extra power that the GT TSI will provide. The rear seats are a little bit cramped.

Behind the Wheel

The Scirocco’s 1.4 litre engine produces 120 bhp (122 ps), which gives the car a modest 0-62 mph time of 9.7 seconds with a top speed of 124 mph.

The Scirocco is a light car with great acceleration, although this entry level version could use a touch more power. The car grips the road brilliantly and the stability management system allows for just enough fun before it takes over.

The gear-box is very responsive and the ride quality is fine. Visibility is pretty good and the engine is surprisingly quiet at cruising speeds, although it will roar into life should you wish to drop a gear and tempt the throttle.

The cabin is clean and comfortable. It comes with various fun features and the dashboard is easy to navigate.

Looks & Equipment

The Scirocco is a great looking car and although this is the entry level version, it comes with plenty of nice features.

These include power steering, alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, an alarm and Bluetooth connectivity.

If you want added luxury, the optional extras include cruise control, leather seats and a satellite navigation system - although all of these come at a considerable cost; £235, £1740 and £1335 respectively.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Scirocco is a very reliable car, as you would expect from Volkswagen.

The car has four seats, but the back has considerably less room than the front, and this three-door model requires even more manoeuvring to get in. The boot is a good size at 312 litres with the seats up and 1006 litres with the seats folded down.

The warranty lasts three years or 60,000 miles. It scored five stars overall in the Euro NCAP ratings and comes with an immobiliser and alarm as standard as well as driver, passenger and front side airbags.

Value for Money

The Scirocco 1.4 TSI version costs £19,845, which isn’t bad for a desirable coupe such as this. The added extras are costly but the fuel economy is impressive at 44.1 mpg. CO2 emissions are 149 g/km.

Insurance and road tax are also very reasonable. This Scirocco is in insurance group 18 and tax band F, so the running costs will be manageable. Buyers who do a lot of long distance driving may prefer the diesel option or the BlueMotion Scirocco.

The reliability of the brilliant 1.4 litre petrol engine is another plus as it means repairs, and in turn repair costs, will be at a minimum.

The car will hold its value very well and is a great cost effective option, for someone who wants a reliable sports coupe.
