The Porsche 911 is an automotive legend and the Carrera S Cabriolet offers all the heritage and prestige of the Porsche brand in one sensational package. Fast, good to drive and stunning to behold, the Carrera S Cabriolet is one of the most desirable cars on the road.

PROS:  The 911 Carrera S Cabriolet looks great, handles brilliantly and has a fantastic 3.8-litre flat-six engine.

CONS:  Impractical, expensive.

Behind the Wheel

The Carrera S Cabriolet's 3.8-litre flat-six engine develops 380bhp and 309lb-ft of torque, rocketing it from 0-62mph in an impressive 4.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 188mph.

The 911 is renowned for its handling ability and the Carrera S Cabriolet is no exception. The car feels agile and there is plenty of grip thanks to the superb chassis. The steering is also lightning-fast and very direct. The suspension can also be switched between comfort and sports modes, offering drivers the best of both worlds.

This soft-top version is arguably even better than the Coupe because you can hear that glorious flat-six engine note even more clearly. There is quite a lot of road noise at high speeds thanks to the fat tyres but this is a minor criticism.

Looks & Equipment

The 911 has been around for nearly fifty years and its looks haven't changed a great deal in the time it's been with us. However, this new 911 is argaubly the best looking model yet and looks sensational from every angle. Your neighbours will be jealous.

The interior is also superb and shows a typically Teutonic attention to detail. Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows, leather seats and a CD player. Optional extras include Sat-Nav (£1311), Bluetooth (£445), MP3 connectivity (£227), rear parking sensors (£348), cruise control (£299) and metallic paint (£745).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

As with any convertible, the roof will be a weak point for security, but the presence of standard deadlocks and an alarm compensates for this.

Every 911 comes with front, side airbags and head airbags. Porsche's stability management system is fitted as standard, and anti-rollover bars pop up behind the rear seats in the event of a rollover.

Porsches are phenomenally reliable cars and there should be no worries on this front. A 3 year/unlimited mileage warranty is inluded as standard.

The 911 is surprisingly practical and has a boot space of 135-litres. The rear seats are only suitable for children but there are plenty of storage solutions inside the cabin.

Value for Money

At £83,861, the 911 Carrera S 3.8 Cabriolet is not cheap by any means but you are getting a lot of car for your money.

It won't be cheap to run either with CO2 emissions of 242g/km meaning that road tax will cost £790 for the first year and £445 a year thereafter. Your fuel bills will also be expensive as the 911 manages just 27.4mpg (combined).
