The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.6 says you know your worth and are not afraid to get the best. Oozing class-topping lavishness, the 911 is as good for a holiday trip as it is for daily town runs. It is fast, punchy and grips firmly. As much as taking three of your mates for a drive would be on the to-do list however, the 911 is a tight squeeze in the rear and can hardly contain two adults.

Other than that, you will have plenty of standard kit and driver controls to ensure a great driving experience and a thrilling ride. By super car standards, the 911’s running costs are considerably low. A comprehensive, 3-year warranty is good enough to take away any anxieties you may have had prior to buying the car.

PROS:  Posh both inside and out. Powerful engine. Superb handling. Fast. Spacious and practical cabin front.

CONS:  Cramped cabin rear. Narrow boot opening.

Behind the Wheel

A powerful, 6-cylinder 24-valve 3614c super unleaded engine is the force behind the 911 Carrera. It is fast, sprinting from 0-62mph in an awe-inspiring 4.9 seconds. The fastest trim in the Carrera range exceeds the 911’s top speed of 180mph by just 8mph, and is the fastest in the class.

The engine can deliver 288 lb-ft of torque, which is class leading and enough to give sustained pull over longer drives. Its maximum power of 340bhp, the highest in the class, explains the car’s sterling performance on the road.

No other coupe comes close to the 911 in handling capabilities. Firm grip, controlled body movement and predictable turning and precise steering all make the 911 a delight to drive. Suspension is softly balanced to give a smooth ride and soaks bumps pretty well.

Refinement levels are high and road noise will only be heard at speed. The engine produces a sweet rumble when revved hard, which is far from being irritating. Large windows and reasonably sized windscreen and rear pillars ensure that all-round visibility is good.

Looks & Equipment

The Porsche 911 will get noticed anywhere. Its striking good looks and classic coupe design are not something you commonly see on the roads. A long 3-door, 4-seat super car, it measures 4435mm x 1808 and is best distinguished by its swooping roofline that slopes in the rear.

The interior is as exquisite as the exterior, thanks to faultless designing and use of high quality materials. Rivals will have to work really hard to beat these high Porsche standards.

The level of standard equipment in the 911 is good. Power steering, central locking, standard Porsche Stability Management (PSM), climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, alloy wheels, leather seats, driver airbag, passenger airbags, front side airbags, alarm, immobiliser and CD player.

The array of available cost options is irresistible but expensive. Sat nav costs £1,311, Bluetooth £445, MP3 connectivity £227, rear parking sensors £348, cruise control £299 and metallic paint £745.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Porsche has built a legacy of reliability, comfort and performance over the decades. Sound engineering and practical concepts are behind every Porsche model that has ever been made, and you can rely on the 911 to deliver.

Every security and safety feature that matters has been installed in the 911, even the base trim Carrera. From 6 airbags, deadlocks and a comprehensive stability control system to theft drive-away resistance systems and break-in resistance, the 911 Carrera has it all.

Driver comfort is assured in the 911 Carrera. Not only does the steering wheel adjust for reach and rake, the driver’s seat, which is very supportive, adjusts in all directions, making it very easy to find a good driving position. Only the controls will try your patience because they are too many and a good number of them too small.

Front passengers will ride in comfort, enjoying plenty of head and legroom. Rear seats are best reserved for short drives with the kids – space is awfully small back there.

There is enough storage space in the cabin, with a sizeable glove box and a good number of cup and bottle holders to contain all your books, magazines and drinks. The boot is located at the front to give way to the engine which is mounted at the rear. Other than being painfully small at only 135 litres, it also has a narrow opening, which makes access even harder.

Value for Money

The Porsche Carrera 911 doesn’t come cheap. It is currently listed at £67,270 but is worth every pound. Porsche is also one of the strongest brands in retaining value, and this applies to the 911 as well.

If you occasionally refuse to be carried away by the Porsche excitement when driving, you may actually hit 30mpg. The combined cycle return is 29.4mpg, which is good given the 911’s power and specifications. Carbon emissions are high at 225g/km – although this is about what you expect from a car in this class. This puts the car in road tax band K, which attracts £580 in VED in the first year and £260 a year thereafter.

Supercars are known to be the most expensive cars to insure and that is true of the 911. It has one of the highest premiums in any car category and a slot under insurance group 49 further confirms this.

A 3-year warranty on unlimited miles and a lengthy service interval (20,000 miles) are both welcome considerations given the high running costs incurred in owning a 911.
