The trend for a four door coupe is one that has been gaining pace over recent years, and the 6 Series Gran Coupe is going up against some hefty competition in the Porsche Panamera. This car is a very comfortable and luxurious one, but it does suffer when it comes to the driving experience, with the size of the Gran Coupe really being felt once you leave the motorway.

PROS:  A real four door coupe that adds a little extra practicality and space over the standard car, while the diesel engine balances great performance with good efficiency too.

CONS:  Despite being longer than the standard model the headroom in the back is still quite limited, and the extra length does make this feel like a big car when you’re behind the wheel.

Behind the Wheel

One of the main issues that afflicts the Gran Coupe is that the ride is a little too firm when you’re driving at low speed. However, there is plenty of grip and the steering does respond quickly, although it is a little inert considering how firm the ride is. There is also a reasonable amount of body roll when it comes to cornering depending on the setting that you use. Inside the cabin there is plenty of adjustment for the steering wheel and the driving seat, and the visibility is fine too.

The engine performance is very good as you would expect from a BMW, with the diesel engine delivering acceleration from 0-62mph in only 5.4 seconds. The top speed is limited to 155mph, and when it comes to driving on the motorway there is a little bit of road noise but it is generally a very calm and refined cabin.

Looks & Equipment

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is an attractive car that utilises many of BMW’s traditional design traits, including the distinctive headlight and grille combination which is typical of the brand. The lines are very sleek and even with the longer wheelbase the body is still definitely a coupe, with the back end being tidy, and the tail light clusters split over the body and the boot door. Inside the car the cabin is classy and attractive, with a nice centre console and a dashboard that is efficient and easy to read.

The level of equipment included with this model is very good, with comfortable leather seats and large alloy wheels. Satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity are also welcome features in the car, while the inclusion of cruise control helps to ensure that it is a civilized companion on the motorway.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

One of the main reasons that many people will consider the 6 Series Gran Coupe is that it is larger than the standard car, and with four doors it makes it much more practical, but there is still limited headroom for those in the back. The boot size is fine, but not especially generous. BMW has an excellent reputation for reliability, and the 6 Series Gran Coupe is likely to extend this reputation further.

The car is also a safe car to drive, as there are plenty of driving aids that help to deliver the power effectively and efficiently to the wheels. There are also a range of airbags that help to look after the driver and passengers should there be an accident.

Value for Money

The extra length that is to be found in the Gran Coupe does come at a premium, with the list price for this model being £68,560. This is an extra couple of thousand pounds over the same version of the standard coupe, but the extra doors do make it a more practical option.

The running costs for this version of the 6 Series Gran Coupe are quite competitive, with the diesel’s high performance engine able to deliver an average 50.4mpg. The insurance group for the Gran Coupe is very high meaning that premiums will be significant, and depreciation is likely to be an issue too. The car is supplied with a three year unlimited mileage warranty, and is also delivered with a three year roadside breakdown assistance package.
