The 640d's six-pot diesel engine delivers an impressive 313bhp and 464lb-ft of torque. The top speed is limited to 155mph and 0-62mph takes 5.6 seconds - a tenth of a second faster than the 640i petrol.
The ride is a little choppy at low speeds and the handling is not as good as you'd expect from a BMW - the driving experience feels a little numb and disconnected.
Although there is some road noise from the wide tyres, wind noise is hushed with the roof up. The car is still very refined and even the diesel engine is very quiet.
The BMW 6 Series looks absolutely fantastic, especially with the roof down, and is much more attractive than its predecessor.
The SE convertible comes with a good amount of standard kit including heated leather seats, metallic paint, power steering, stability control, cruise control, climate control, alloy wheels, stereo, MP3 connectivity, rear parking sensors, satellite navigation and Bluetooth as standard.
The 6 Series Convertible has yet to be tested by Euro NCAP but should be very safe thanks to a raft of airbags and driver aids.
Whilst the 6 Series features spacious front seats, the back seats are quite tight and will fit children with no problem, but will not accommodate adults for long periods without considerable discomfort. The boot is smaller than in the Coupe with just 300-litres on offer with the roof up.
BMW are famous for producing very reliable cars and the 6 Series Convertible comes with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty.
The 640d SE model costs £68,210, making it one of the cheapest models in the 6 Series convertible range, beaten only by the 640i SE. The running costs will be very low for a car of this type thanks to combined fuel economy of 50.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 148g/km which put the Beemer into VED band F.
The diesel engine offers much better value for money over the petrol engines and the CO2 emissions and fuel economy are vastly superior. The 6 Series will also benefit from very strong residual values.
