Volkswagen has revealed a new version of its up! city car which uses a modified version of the diesel-electric hybrid drivetrain found the in the new XL1.
The Twin-up!, which is named in reference to its twin power sources, will be unveiled at both the LA and Tokyo Motor Shows next month.
Weighing 1,205kg, the Twin-up! is 410kg heavier than the XL1 and as a result Volkswagen has upped the power output to compensate. So although the Twin-up! gets the same 47bhp 800c two-cylinder turbodiesel engine you get in the XL1, the power of the electric motor has been increased from 27bhp to 47bhp. The power is sent to the front wheels a via a seven-speed double-clutch gearbox.
Volkswagen claims that the Twin-up! will get from 0-37mph in 8.8 seconds, 0-62mph in 15.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 87mph.
An 8.6kWh lithium-ion battery is fitted in the rear of the Twin-up! between the rear seats and the boot and a larger 33-litre fuel tank is fitted too.
With CO2 emissions of just 27g/km, should the Twin-up! make it into production it will be exempt from both road tax and the London Congestion Charge. Volkswagen also claims that the Twin-up! will be capable of 257mpg meaning that, in theory at least, it will be capable of travelling 1,000 miles on twenty-four pounds' worth of diesel.
VW is yet to confirm whether the Twin-up! will make it into production.
