Citroen has revealed its new Divine DS concept ahead of the car’s debut at the Paris Motor Show next month.
The DS line is now a standalone brand rather than a sub-brand of Citroen, and the French firm is hoping to mark itself out with the new concept.
It’s not based on any existing car, nor does it preview a future model. Instead, the Divine DS is purely a styling showcase, designed to give us an idea of what future DS models will look like.
And, as you can see, the signs are good. The Divine DS is around the same size as a VW Golf, albeit a little lower. A large diamond-patterned grille with a chrome surround marks out the front end, while the floating roof is also patterned in alternating matt, opaque and transparent diamonds.
And if you thought the outside looks mad, it’s nothing compared to the interior. The centre console is designed to resemble – and we’re not making this up – a backbone, and the design of the seats is based on the design of a watch strap. It genuinely looks, in proper Citroen style, completely bonkers, and if a DS model is to go into production based on this car, the company will have to turn down the madness a bit before it goes on sale.
Under the bonnet, things are more conventional. There’s a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine chucking out 270bhp. Citroen also claims the car will be economical and clean, conforming to the new Euro 6 standards and emitting just 145g/km of CO2.
The Divine DS will make its public debut at the Chantilly Concours d’Elegance on 7 September, before appearing at the Paris motor show on 2 October.
