Caterham has opened the order books for a new entry-level variant of its iconic Seven, the Seven 160.
Revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last month, the Caterham Seven 160 is powered by a microscopic 660cc, three-cylinder turbocharged Suzuki engine which develops 80bhp. Thanks to the Seven 160's low weight, the engine is capable of propelling the car from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 100mph.
Caterham has also fitted the Seven 160 with a live rear axle which it claims harks back to the early Sevens which used the same suspension layout. Caterham describes the Seven 160's handling as "balanced yet playful."
Graham Macdonald, Caterham CEO, said of the new car: "The 160 offers something truly different to the entry-level market. It's more economical, more accessible and every bit as fun on the road as other Sevens but has its own unique personality."
Production of the Caterham Seven 160 is expected to begin in January 2014 with the first customer deliveries taking place in the spring. Prices start from £14,995 for the kit, with fully-built cars starting from £17,995.
