Peugeot is committing to its revolutionary Hybrid Air technology and will unveil a new 208 hatchback powered by the system at the Paris Motor Show next month.
The car, called the 208 HYbrid Air 2L is based on the production version of the 208; however, it weighs 100kg less than the production car thanks to an exotic mix of steel, aluminium and composites.
The 2L in the Peugeot's name stands for 2 litres per 100km, the projected fuel economy of the car. That’s 141mpg, in pounds and pence.
The 208’s drivetrain consists of a standard petrol engine mated to a compressed air system. The air is stored in a tank under the boot and pumped to the engine hydraulically. It can then be used to assist or even replace the petrol engine to enable maximum efficiency.
When slowing down, whether by braking or taking your foot off the accelerator, the compressed air tank is recharged.
There’s no word yet on whether the 208 HYbrid Air will go into production, or how much it will cost if it does, but the French government is aiming to make an affordable 2.0-litre per 100km vehicle available to the public by 2020.
