The UK-built Vauxhall Astra is in with a shout of the European Car of the Year title after its name was added to a seven-strong shortlist.
The winner of the prestigious award will be announced in Geneva at the end of February, but the all-new Astra has already impressed the panel of 58 leading European motoring journalists who had the unenviable task of whittling down the 35 entrants into a shortlist of seven after an extensive testing session in Denmark.
If the all-new Astra is successful in its quest to be named European Car of the Year 2016 it will be able to add the accolade to its already impressive haul, having already been crowned Scottish Car of the Year 2015 as well as collecting the 2015 Golden Steering Wheel and SAFETYBEST 2015 awards on the continent.
First awarded in 1964, the European Car of the Year award has been a happy hunting ground for Vauxhall of late, with the manufacturer earning the title in 2009 with the Insignia and again in 2012 with the Ampera.
Priced from £15,295, the all-new Astra is lighter, smaller, but with more interior room thanks to a clever use of space. A range of new petrol and diesel power options see CO2 emissions fall as low as 88g/km, while new-in-class technology like Vauxhall’s OnStar personal connectivity system and IntelliLux Matrix LED headlights also feature in the range.
