Subaru has confirmed that the Subaru WRX STI is returning to the UK.
It's been just over a year since Subaru announced it was pulling the plug on the STI in the UK; however, the Japanese manufacturer confirmed today at the Detroit Motor Show that the new model will be available in Blighty from this summer, with prices starting from £28,995.
The new WRX STI is based on the WRX saloon which was unveiled at the LA Motor Show in November, but has undergone significant tweaking and testing to ensure the car represents "the pinnacle of Subaru AWD sports performance."
Underneath the bonnet, the WRX STI is fitted with a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-pot boxer engine which develops 305bhp and 290lb-ft of torque. The power is sent through a new, shorter throw six-speed manual gearbox to Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, which uses the latest vehicle dynamics control and Active Torque Vectoring.
The springs and dampers have been retuned to provide a more comfortable ride while maintaining body composure and the electric power steering has been quickened up.
The new WRX STI is 25mm longer than its predecessor, offering greater rear legroom, shoulder-room and elbow-room in the cabin as well as improved boot space.
A large rear wing is included as standard, as is a rear diffuser integrated into the rear bumper, twin exhausts and new 18-inch alloy wheels. LED headlights are also included as standard and a smattering of STI badges complete the visual transformation.
Inside, there's a new D-shaped steering wheel with a smaller diameter as well as soft-touch plastics, new dials and carbon-effect and metal trim.
Paul Tunnicliffe, Subaru UK Managing Director said: "We wanted to acknowledge the following the WRX STI has, and while both the market and the Brand in the UK has changed in recent years, the WRX STI remains a demonstration of Subaru's technical know-how.
"The new model will only be available in limited numbers when it goes on sale in summer nevertheless we were keen to give our performance car fans the opportunity to try it here for themselves."
