This is the Nissan Bladeglider, a new all-electric sports car inspired by the DeltaWing racing car, which will make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month.
I know what you're thinking. You're thinking: "Oh, that's nice. A new electric sports car concept which will wow the crowds at the motor show and then promptly disappear, never to be seen again." Well, no actually. Nissan is dead serious about putting the Bladeglider into production and reckons the car could be gracing Nissan dealer forecourts within the next three years.
The first thing you'll notice about the Bladeglider is that, like the DeltaWing, it's pointy. Nissan claims that the reason for this is that it reduces drag and enhances manoeuvrability, with the obvious side-effect that it also looks very cool. Aerodynamic downforce is created by a lightweight carbon-fibre underbody which eliminates the need for drag-creating wings.
Nissan has yet to confirm the details of the Bladeglider's powertrain, claiming that it could be the first Nissan to be fitted with in-wheel motors. The power for these motors will come from lithium-ion batteries which will be mounted low and towards the rear of the car to enhance stability and handling and maintain the car's 30:70 weight distribution ratio.
The Bladeglider seats three in a V-shaped seating configuration. The driver sits in the middle of car, with the passengers sitting to the sides and slightly behind, much like in the McLaren F1.
BladeGlider was conceived around delivering a glider-like exhilaration that echoes its lightweight, downsized hyper-efficient aerodynamic form," said Shiro Nakamura, Nissan’s senior vice president and chief creative officer. "This design is more than revolutionary; it's transformational, applying our most advanced electric drive-train technology and racetrack-inspired styling in the service of a new dimension of shared driving pleasure."
We'll bring you more information when the Bladeglider makes its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show.
