Lamborghini has confirmed that its Urus SUV will go into production as early as 2017.

The news was announced at the conclusion of Lamborghini's 50th anniversary celebrations, following the launch of the insane Egoista supercar concept over the weekend.

Underneath, the Urus is based on the same MLB architecture that underpins the Porsche Cayenne, the VW Touareg and the Audi Q7. It's also the same platform which will be used on Bentley's planned off-roader; however, it remains unclear whether that will ever see the light of day.

But where the existing MLB architecture utilises aluminium and steel in its construction, Lamborghini is expected to introduce more carbon-fibre to the platform, keeping kerb weight to a minimum in an effort to maximise performance.

Very little is known about the powertrain which Lamborghini will use on the Urus, but reports suggest a power output in the region of 600bhp. It is also rumoured that the Urus could use a hybrid powertrain, which should see the car returning slightly better economy figures than Lambo's first SUV, the simply enormous LM002.

There's a question mark over the Urus' styling too. It seems likely that the car will look similar to the Urus concept (pictured above), which was revealed at last year's Beijing Motor Show, but given that it'll be another four years until the Urus sees the light of day, we'd expect there to be at least some styling modifications.
