A charity auction to raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) benefited from strong bidding on two special edition R8 Spyder cars donated by Audi.

Every year at the White Tie & Tiara Ball, which is held at the home of Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish, there is a charity auction to raise money for the singer's charitable foundation – the Elton John AIDS Foundation – which currently works in 15 different countries, spending £14 million per year. The charity helps to provide life-saving medicines to thousands of people, and also provides important education programmes as well as shelter and support for people affected by HIV and AIDS.

Audi originally offered to provide one car to help raise funds for this important work - a striking 'chrome-finish' model of the R8 Spyder soft-top sports car, with a top speed of 194mph. But bidding was so strong on the car - reaching an impressive £250,000 before the hammer went down to complete the sale - the company then offered to provide a second car. Once both cars had been sold the grand total raised by the Audi contributions was £620,000.

Jeremy Hicks, the Director of Audi UK, announced that the company were "absolutely delighted" to have been able to help raise such an impressive amount of money for Sir Elton John's charity, but also paid tribute to the generosity of the guest at the event to whom he said "we owe an enormous vote of thanks".
