After a quarter-of-a-century and four generations, the Kia Sportage is celebrating five million sales.
The current Kia Sportage, launched two years ago, is Kia’s biggest UK seller, with 39,683 sold here in 2017. A sales surge following the regeneration in 2016 also saw the Sportage overtake the Rio as Kia’s most popular model globally.
When the model first appeared at the 1991 Tokyo Motor Show it pioneered the concept of the Urban SUV, and the first generation launched in1993 went on to sell half-a-million units.
“We are extremely proud to have achieved this milestone production figure for our global best-seller. The continued and accelerating popularity of the Sportage demonstrates the breadth of the car’s abilities and the strength of its appeal to buyers in markets all around the world,” said Ho Sung Song, Executive Vice President of Kia’s Global Operations Division, “Since 1993, the Sportage has become a benchmark car in the compact SUV segment, and its success has also led to the creation of a diverse and comprehensive range of SUVs and crossovers from Kia – with other new models to follow in future.”
