Honda has announced it will cut 800 jobs at its Swindon factory by spring, following a period of poor demand in the European market.
The announcement follows what Honda describes as "sustained conditions of low demand in European markets", which "make it necessary to re-align Honda's business structure".
The Swindon plant, which currently employs 3,500 people and builds the Jazz, Civic and CR-V models, recruited 500 more staff during 2012 to meet a forecasted production increase following the launch of the CR-V.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said: "This is very disappointing news for Honda staff and their families. The decline in European new car markets and uncertain growth prospects has forced a number of vehicle manufacturers to restructure their operations.
"Despite challenges brought by weak European demand, the longer-term prospects for the UK automotive sector remain good."
