Daihatsu has revealed two new concept cars which preview a new, revived Copen roadster ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show.
The Copen, if you recall, was a small roadster with 659cc turbocharged petrol engine which was designed to take on the likes of the Smart Roadster and the Ford Streetka. Unfortunately, it was killed off a couple of years ago; however, the new concepts lend support to the claim that the nameplate will return.
The two new concepts preview a standard roadster version of the new Copen dubbed the RMZ (the blue one) and a more rugged SUV-inspired model called the XMZ (the green one).
Both will measure 3,395mm in length and 1,475mm in width and will feature a retractable folding metal roof. Both will be powered by a 660cc three-cylinder engine, in accordance with Japanese kei car regulations, and will get a CVT automatic gearbox.
This is the second time in as many weeks that a Japanese manufacturer has hinted at the return of a kei car roadster -- Honda recently revealed the S660 concept which could herald the return of the Beat.
