Honda has revealed a new concept car which previews a compact mid-engined, rear-wheel drive roadster.

Named the Honda S660 Concept, the new car is described by Honda as "an open-top sports-type mini-vehicle," which could become the spiritual successor to the Honda S600 sports car of the 1960s and the Honda Beat kei car of the 1990s.

The S660 Concept could hearld the return of the Beat nameplate.

Honda has yet to release any official info on the new car; however, its name suggests that it will be powered by a 660cc engine. Under Japanese regulations, kei cars must have an engine no larger than 660cc with a power output of 63bhp or less. It seems likely therefore that the S660 will produce around 63bhp.

The pictures reveal that the S660 will feature a flappy-paddle automatic gearbox and a digital dashboard.

It's unclear whether the S660 will make it into production and, if it does, whether it will be sold in the UK. If the car does go on sale in the UK market, we could also see it being fitted with a more powerful engine.

The Honda S660 concept car will go on show at the Tokyo Motor Show next month.
