The Cheshire-built all-new Vauxhall Astra has been flying the flag for Britain by winning a coveted continental accolade.
The all-new Astra topped the best compact car category at Germany’s motoring Oscars the Golden Steering Wheel Awards. Awarded jointly by German press giants Bild am Sonntag and Auto Bild, the Golden Steering wheel lauds the best newcomers each year after extensive test drives.
Built at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant, the all-new Astra impressed with weight savings off almost 200kg compared to the outgoing model, as well as its range of petrol and diesel engines including an all-new 1.4-litre four-cylinder ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo.
The judging panel were also wowed by the inclusion of Vauxhall’s new OnStar system, which features emergency response notification and stolen vehicle recovery technology. The all-new Astra is also one of the first mainstream manufacturer models to boast Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available through a new version of the IntelliLink infotainment system.
Speaking at the ceremony in Berlin, Vauxhall Opel Group CEO Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann said, “We at Vauxhall/Opel can be extremely proud of this Golden Steering Wheel. It proves that all of our efforts have paid off. The new Astra is synonymous for lightweight, highly-efficient engines, better packaging, features from the luxury class, trendsetting connectivity and exemplary quality.”
