0-62 Mph: 10.3 secs

An insurance group of 17 and a healthy fuel consumption figure of 47.1 mpg means that this car will not cost the earth to keep on the road. The generous 70-litre fuel tank will ensure high mileage before each top-up of unleaded petrol.
It is hard to believe that a car this size can be powered by a 1390 cc engine but has decent performance figures. The seven speed automatic gearbox adds to the driving experience.
PROS: Volkswagen’s BlueMotion Technology stop/start system offers amazing frugality for a petrol engine making this one of the best value cars in its class, and good value at £20,630.
CONS: S trim cars are the most basic level and for more kit, an upgrade to the SE might be in order. The diesel engine 1.6 is more efficient.
The 1390 cc engine turns out around 120 bhp at 5,000 revs. The 148 lb ft of torque may seem a little sluggish, but travelling from 0-62 mph in 10.3 seconds is still quite impressive for such an economic engine.
The standard equipment includes power steering, central locking, electric front windows and mirrors. MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity enhance the cabin and alloy wheels are standard fare.
Items like satellite navigation systems, cruise control and rear parking sensors will cost you £705, £265 and £425 respectively.
The five-seater is actually better suited for four adults, especially on long journeys, but otherwise the saloon is a comfortable, fairly spacious car. There is 565 litres of room available in the boot, too.
Driver, passenger and side impact airbags are all as standardm as well as the factory fitted stability control. Security issues are covered with a standard alarm and immobiliser.
All Passats come with the usual Volkswagen approved two year or 60,000 mile warranty.
As a basic entry level four door family saloon, this car is great value. The small engine won’t impress some drivers ,but the added bonus of good fuel consumption figures, low insurance and tax bands will appeal to budget buyers.
The economy of the engine is great, offering a rate of 47.1 mpg, and emissions are fairly low at 138 g/km. However, for those really concerned with running costs, the diesel 1.6 version is more efficient and the SE trim might be worth the extra money for some additional features.
