Relatively good performance credentials and efficiency levels make the Volkswagen Passat CC 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Technology a great family car for the money. This trim level offers a good range of basic equipment but limited space in the rear of the vehicle impairs the practicality somewhat.

PROS:  Efficiency levels are high and performance credentials are also pretty good for the class.

CONS:  Rear space is a little limited, making it less practical for families.

Behind the Wheel

With a maximum power output of 138 bhp at 4000 rpm and torque figures of 236 lb-ft at 1750 rpm the performance credentials of this vehicle are relatively strong for a family car. A top speed of 132 mph is more than acceptable for this class and combines with relatively fast acceleration capable of reaching 0-62 mph in 9.8 seconds.

Road noise can be loud, especially when driving over uneven road surfaces.

Looks & Equipment

The car is fairly attractive and the trim level offers a good range of features, but buyers can choose to upgrade to the GT model if they want additional equipment.

Standard equipment with this model includes power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, a built-in sat nav and an advanced stereo system with CD and MP3 compatibility.

Rear parking sensors cost an additional £385 whilst the interior can be upgraded to leather seats for an extra cost of £1,575.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The firm drive of the car can sometimes be a problem, which makes the ride a little uncomfortable. Visibility in the coupe is limited through both the front and back windows. Headroom is also a bit limited and the rear seats in particular can feel cramped for taller passengers. The coupe offers an adequate 452 litres when the seats are up, making it reasonably sized for family use.

The Volkswagen brand is associated with strong reliability, which is evident in the Passat. For additional peace of mind, the car comes with a three year warranty for 60,000 miles with recommended service intervals varying between models.

Overall, the quality of the build is high but some internal materials look a little cheap. This can be seen as a slight disadvantage, but might be expected given the reasonable price.

In terms of safety, the car comes with an advanced safety kit to protect passengers. Driver, passenger and front side airbags are all fitted as standard features and there is also an alarm and immobiliser to protect the car from theft.

Value for Money

Priced at £24,750, this model is fairly reasonable for its class and customers get a good range of kit for the money. Running costs are also kept low with good fuel efficiency of 60.1 mpg offered alongside low road tax costs under band D. These are caused by low carbon emissions of just 125 g/km – allowing customers to benefit from a car with strong green credentials. Insurance premiums are also in the lower half of the scale in group 22.

However, with some features missing and some restrictions with internal space, the Volkswagen Passat CC is not the strongest model in its class.
