The Volkswagen Passat Alltrack is a car that has been designed as an alternative to crossover vehicles, and this puts it into competition with cars such as the Volvo XC70, and the Alltrack does come up very well. The driving experience is quite good and the fuel efficiency isn't too bad either, but the cabin in the Passat Alltrack is really very nice and this version also comes with a fine level of kit.

PROS:  The four wheel drive means that the Passat Alltrack has plenty of traction and can tow trailers too, while the engine has plenty of power and the model also comes with a generous level of equipment.

CONS:  The purchase price is more than you will pay for a standard Passat estate, and this puts it above crossover cars such as the Qashqai too, while the car does suffer from body roll and a lack of feedback in the steering.

Behind the Wheel

The handling for the Passat Alltrack is quite good with the steering being quick and responsive to the steering wheel, and the 4x4 does mean that it has plenty of traction even on muddy and slippery roads. There is however a reasonable amount of body roll while cornering, and the steering is far too inert to involve the driving experience. Inside the cabin the Passat Alltrack has plenty of adjustment both in terms of the steering wheel and the driving seat, and the level of visibility in the car is very good too.

The performance delivered by the 2.0 litre diesel engine isn't bad at all, with acceleration from 0-62mph achieved in 10.3 seconds. The top speed of 123mph is also fine for the majority of people who will rarely get to such a speed. The level of refinement in the cabin is impressive, with the diesel engine barely audible, and a little bit of wind noise audible at speed.

Looks & Equipment

For the most part the Alltrack version of the Passat is very similar to the standard Passat in terms of style, with some protective hard plastic trim around the base of the car the main difference. The grille and headlight cluster makes for a tidy and stylish front end, while the back end is tidy and bears the Alltrack badge. Inside the cabin the level of trim is very nice, and the centre console is attractive with chunky practical controls.

The level of equipment with this version of the Passat Alltrack is exceptional, with the alloy wheels helping with the high quality image of the car. Satellite navigation and the leather seats are also quality features that help to make this an attractive proposition, while the CD stereo has an MP3 input.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The practicality of the Passat Alltrack is very good, with a cabin that can easily accommodate five people, and a boot that has a good level of space too. The four wheel drive means that this car is also more suitable for those who want the practicality of a 4x4 without having the larger vehicle. Volkswagen has an excellent reliability record, and the Passat is one of the established models so should have excellent reliability.

As well as being practical the Passat Alltrack is a very safe car, coming with a range of airbags to look after occupants in the front and the back seats, and also has a number of driving aids such as stability control and traction control.

Value for Money

With a list price of £28,475, this version of the Passat Alltrack isn't a cheap car to buy, and with many crossover vehicles such as the Nissan Qashqai available for less money, it could be difficult for many people to justify buying the car.

The running costs for the Passat Alltrack don't quite match up with the standard Passat Estate, but the 2.0 litre diesel engine is able to deliver an average 49.6mpg. The insurance costs for the car are quite reasonable, and the practicality of the vehicle should make for decent resale values. The car comes with a three year or sixty thousand mile warranty and is also supplied with one year's roadside breakdown assistance, which is a fairly standard package for cars in this class.
