The Volkswagen Golf GT 2.0 TDi blends decent performance with the economy of a diesel engine. The ride is a little unrefined but the spacious and well built interior make this a good, comfortable car.

PROS:  The low suspension set-up and 17 inch wheels give the Golf a sporty feel. An impressive and economical diesel engine combines with a plush interior to offer a comfortable and powerful drive.

CONS:  The ride is a little harsh and the high purchase price means that many buyers will be tempted by the cheaper models in the range.

Behind the Wheel

The Golf's 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine gives the car a sporty feel, generating 138bhp and taking the car up to a top speed of 130mph. Acceleration is fairly swift for a diesel engine as well, with the car taking 9.3 seconds to travel from 0-62mph.

The steering is responsive and the suspension is set-up so that the Golf GT 2.0 TDI has a more sporty feel. This all adds to the fun of driving but unfortunately compromises the quality of the ride.

The engine is fairly refined and generates little noise, even when worked hard. Visibility from behind the wheel is very good and the dashboard is easy to navigate and well-built whilst the interior is spacious and comfortable.

Looks & Equipment

The Golf GT 2.0 TDI is a great looking car with aggressive and sporty trim and large 17 inch alloy wheels which give it a great appearance.

The Volkswagen comes with power steering, air conditioning, stability control, electric mirrors, electric windows, cruise control, leather seats and MP3/Bluetooth connectivity all included as standard. Optional extras include climate control, rear parking sensors and a built-in satellite navigation system.

As a good-sized family car with a spacious interior the Golf GT 2.0 TDI will seat four comfortably although the fifth passenger may suffer a little in the rear middle seat.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Despite its sport feel this is essentially a very good family car. The interior is very spacious and comfortably seats four whilst the car is also built with the sort of attention to detail we've come to expect from VW.

The boot is a good size and can be increased by folding down the rear seats. With all seats in place the boot capacity is 350 litres - bigger than a Focus but slightly smaller than an Astra - whilst 1,305 litres is offered when the seats are folded down. The interior offers enough head and leg room for average-sized adults both in the back and the front but taking advantage of the full five person occupancy may be a bit of a struggle.

The Golf GT 2.0 TDI is offered with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty. The car also comes with an alarm and an engine immobiliser, protecting it from theft.

Value for Money

The Volkswagen Golf GT 2.0 TDi is not cheap by any means with prices starting at £21,815. Whilst this is a little steep, the car does offer numerous benefits which justify the cost.

The engine returns 58.9 mpg on the combined cycle to keep fuel costs low whilst insurance and road tax won't break the bank either with this Golf falling under insurance group 24 and road tax band D - both of which are towards the lower end of the scale.

Wolfsburg's reputation for reliability is also a plus and means that repairs are unlikely to be needed, keeping costs down.
