The Golf estate comes with plenty of equipment, with the option to upgrade if the owner so desires and the performance is satifactory - it is hardly an exciting ride, but for a pratical family car, the estate is perfectly suitable, if a little pricey.

PROS:  The estate is a practical car, with reasonably good performance figures. The SE offers enough kit to satisfy for the price and plenty of optional extras.

CONS:  You are paying a premium for the VW brand, could get more for your money with rivals, the Skoda Octavia, for example, offers more boot space. Also, the diesel version will be more efficient than the petrol engine in this SE 1.4 TSI.

Behind the Wheel

The top speed of the estate is 125 mph and takes 9.9 seconds to travel from 0-62 mph. The car’s power output is 120 bhp and has torque figures of 148 lb-ft at 1500-4000 rpm.

This car has a solid feel, handles well and has a comfortable and quiet cabin.

Looks & Equipment

The standard exterior of the car is enhanced with alloy wheels as standard and metallic paint is optional at £465.

Air conditioning is fitted, but climate control is a further £790. Electric door mirrors and electric front windows are standard.

Cruise control is standard and leather seating is available for £2,080. Rear parking sensors can be bought on top of the purchase price of the vehicle for £440.

The in-car entertainment comes fitted with a CD player, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth.

Satellite navigation is not standard, but can be fitted for £1,505.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The car is equipped with an alarm and central locking as standard.

This car is very practical, seating five people, with five door access. The boot space is also generous; when the rear seats are upright there is 505 litres of boot space, and when the rear seats are folded there is 1495 litres.

The car is fitted with driver, passenger and front side airbags as standard.

VW have a history in providing good quality cars and the Golf is an established model.

Value for Money

The Volkswagen Golf Estate SE 1.4 TSI 5dr is available from new at £20,095, which makes it more expensive than some of its similarly equipped rivals, such as the Skoda Octavia.

The car produces 146 g/km of CO2 emissions and performs an average of 44.8 mpg. Both figures can be beaten with the diesel engine, but overall the Golf estate is a practical car with fairly good performance figures, a good quality build and is highly suitable as a family car.
