CarSite Verdict:  3.5/5
The Bluemotion's greatest asset is its incredibly low fuel consumption. This aspect and the car's low road tax and insurance group make it very cheap to run and maintain. It delivers decent performance and a high level of practicality. However, it is expensive and some of the cheaper diesel engines are nearly as efficient.

PROS:  The Bluemotion's CO2 emissions are excellent, so the road tax is very cheap. Great fuel efficiency means cheap running and maintenance costs.

CONS:  The Bluemotion is an expensive option and some of the other diesels are nearly as efficient, but cheaper.

Behind the Wheel

The top speed of the Bluemotion is 118 mph, taking 11.9 seconds for it to travel from 0-62 mph. The car’s power output is 104 bhp and it has torque figures of 185 lb-ft at 1500-2500 rpm.

The Golf Estate delivers an excellent driving experience and is a lot of fun, with sharp and responsive handling. The ride is a smooth and comfortable one, and most notably much more refined than that of its predecessor, with very little noise intrusion. The car also deals with most potholes and road imperfections fairly well.

Looks & Equipment

The Golf Estate is an attractive model with smooth, clean lines, enhanced with alloy wheels as standard. Metallic paint costs £465.

Air conditioning is standard, but climate control will cost a further £790. Electric door mirrors and electric front windows are standard too.

Cruise control is included in the purchase price, but leather seating will cost £1,885.

The estate also comes fitted with a CD player, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth.

Satellite navigation costs £1,505 and rear parking sensors are £440.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

An alarm and central locking are both fitted and it also comes with driver, passenger and front side airbags as standard.

This estate car is very practical. It seats five occupants and has five-door access, with good boot space; there is 505 litres with the rear seats up and when the seats are folded there is 1,495 litres.

Reliability is good with VW and the Golf is a well-established model.

Value for Money

The Volkswagen Golf Estate Sportline BlueMotion Technology 1.6 TDI 5dr is available from £21,965. This car will reward buyers with its fantastic fuel economy.

The car produces 109 g/km of CO2 emissions and its fuel consumption is minimal too, as the model performs an average of 67.3 mpg. The Bluemotion provides fantastic efficiency, so the price (although slightly high) is good value when the running costs are considered.
