PROS: The 308 SW is well priced, good looking and well-made.
CONS: Firm ride, noisy engine, lack of rear seat space
The 308 SW Active has a 1.6-litre engine which churns out 120bhp and 118lb-ft of torque at 4250rpm. 0-62mph takes a fairly average 11.5 seconds and flat out you'll be going 121mph. The Pug doesn't feel fast thanks to its big heavy body and the engine feels laboured when worked hard. We'd opt for a diesel model instead.
The suspension is also way too firm, making the ride very uncomfortable. The steering feels vague and the 308 SW is no fun to drive. The driving position also feels a little awkward and no amount of adjustment of the steering wheel or seat seems to correct it.
The Peugeot 308 SW Active 1.6 VTi is a great looking car. Although it is heavily based on the 308 hatchback, it somehow manages to look much more balanced and attractive. The interior is also very stylish and feels well-made.
This car comes with plenty of standard equipment including power steering, alloy wheels, cruise control, electric door mirrors, electric windows, air-con, CD player, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth.
The 308 came near the bottom if its class in the 2011 J D Power Survey and, although the car feels very well made, there have been a number of mechanical and interior problems with the car.
However, it should be safe and comes with a full suite of airbags. The standard 308 also scored five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
The legroom in the back is a little tight but the 308 SW's boot is absolutely enormous, with 348-litres on offer with the rear seats up and an impressive 2149-litres when the rear seats are folded flat.
The 308 SW Active 1.6 VTi costs from £18,295 which is very reasonable for a car of this type with this much interior space. The running costs are only average: 42.8mpg combined is hardly a ground-breaking figure and group G road tax is relatively normal for a car of this size. Insurance should be relatively cheap, however, with the 308 falling under group 14.

The 308 SW is a very good estate car for those on a tight budget. It offers an attractive package thanks to an impressive amount of interior space, however there are better cars around for the cash.
