PROS: The 308 SW is practical, spacious, well-made and cheap.
CONS: The engine is a bit noisy and the rear seat legroom is unimpressive. Resale values will be weak.
The 308 SW Access has a 1.6-litre petrol engine which develops 120bhp and 118lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0-62mph time of 11.5 seconds and a top speed of 121mph. This is more than adequate for a car of this type, although the engine can become noisy under heavy acceleration.
The ride is very firm and, because the Pug is a heavy car, it feels big to drive and offers very little in the way of driving pleasure. The driving position also feels very awkward: the steering wheel and pedals are offset to one side, making the driving experience very unnerving.
The 308 SW is a good looking car and the cabin is both well styled and made from quality materials.
This car comes with a basic level of standard equipment including power steering, CD player, air-con, central locking, stability control and electric front windows. Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity are a joint option, costing £210 for the pair and alloy wheels will set you back a further £210.
The 308 SW is a very practical proposition, with a huge 348-litre boot with the rear seats up and 2149-litres available with the rear seats down. Rear legroom is at a premium, however.
Safety should not be an issue as the standard 308 received the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests and the 308 SW is fitted with driver, passenger and front-side airbags as standard.
The 308 SW feels well made but the standard 308 has performed very poorly in the 2011 J D Power Survey. Peugeot have a bit of a dodgy repuation when it comes to reliability too.
At £16,895, the 308 SW Access 1.6 VTi is very well priced, however depreciation will be very steep.
On the plus side, running costs should be very low. You should manage 44.1mpg which is respectable, if not spectacular. CO2 emissions of 147g/km mean that the 308 SW falls under VED band F - again, fairly reasonable. Group 13 insurance is also pretty average for a car of this type.
Let's cut to the chase, the 308 CC is a dreadful car. It is expensive, not very nice to drive, slow and deeply embarrassing to be seen in. If you want a Peugeot 308, get the hatchback, if you want ...

The 308 CC is well built and very economical but this fails to make up for the fact that it's slow, noisy, unrefined and deeply uncool. It's also pricey for what it is - there are much better cars ...

The 308 SW is a very good estate car for those on a tight budget. It offers an attractive package thanks to an impressive amount of interior space, however there are better cars around for the cash.
